Child sitting on a chair in a little room reading a book

Welcome to the CVI Book Nook!

The materials on this site were created for students who have Visual Impairments and Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairments. They are intended to be downloaded and used by parents, caregivers and teachers working with students who have Visual Impairments and CVI. These materials can be used to teach, reinforce, and assess a variety of visual attention, object and image recognition, reading comprehension and Expanded Core Curriculum skills.

I have intentionally uploaded PowerPoints so they can be downloaded and adapted for your own needs.  Change the background color...perhaps your student is fine with white, or maybe they like another color background. Change the font type, size or color.  Change the image to a photo of a familiar object. There is no one size fits all when it comes to creating books for students who have CVI.  Think of these books as a "starter kit," meant to be adapted and changed to meet your student's needs.

Each book is the result of idea sharing and collaborative brainstorming among creative and expert Teachers for the Visually Impaired and material specialists at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District in Michigan. I am particularly grateful to Jessicia Klenk WISD TCVI for her constant inspiration. So many of these books had their start with an email from Jessicia stating, "I have an idea..."  I also want to thank Becky Starick and Janet Hassa, our WISD material specialists, for their constant positivity...any idea is a pursuable idea...and for making these books magically come alive in print formats.

"INVITATION"

by Shel Silverstein.

If you are a dreamer, come in,

If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,

A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...

If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire

For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.

Come in!

Come in!
